Hello! Welcome to Worth Cooking! Worth Cooking was created as a dual purpose venture. It is a way for me to remember to take joy in what has recently gone from a hobby to a chore- cooking. Even more so, it is to help those like me, who find themselves in a challenging place when it comes to food. Particularly, those who desire to feed their family delicious and nutritious foods but have been thrown the curveball of food allergies and intolerances and struggle to overcome these unique challenges.
Cooking, and getting creative in the kitchen, has always been a joy. However, each time we discovered a new food allergy or intolerance in our family, I took a step away from that joy. Cooking became a very necessary and consuming burden.
I figured I could let it stay that way, or do something to bring back the joy. I embraced the challenge head on and the kitchen became my main creative outlet. Part of this process included posting some of my recipes on my mommy blog and writing eCookBooks. I enjoyed seeing my little recipes received warmly by those they helped. I was hooked, and began to take baby steps to beginning an allergen friendly food blog.
Learning to cook around allergies has been a unique challenge. It turns out there is more than one path to a delicious plate of pasta and birthday cakes.
What You Will See?
The focus on my recipes will be on the more common food allergies. All will be gluten*, dairy*, and soy* free. Most will also inherently be egg*, nut*, and corn* free. There will also be the occasional ones, as I see the need, which exclude less common allergies (such as coconut and citrus).
*Using nut free chocolate when it calls for chocolate, etc.
What makes these recipes unique? I focus on whole, real foods. I very rarely use xantham and guar gums if I can at all avoid it and use whole grains over refined ones or starches. I often find it necessary to use a little bit of starch, but try to not let it be the backbone of any recipe.
I strive for recipes that are good on their own account. Not just for being “gluten free,” “egg free,” “dairy free,” etc. but recipes that I can serve unapologetically to those without allergies.
About The Name
Worth Cooking is a food blog with recipes that cater to food allergies and yet are still WORTH COOKING that is written by Debra WORTH.
So, Worth Cooking = Debra WORTH COOKING recipes and then sharing the ones WORTH COOKING. Clever, huh? I think so!
I guess this page would not be very complete without a little bit about yours truly.
First and foremost I am a daughter of the kings of kings. I endeavor to remember to accept his new mercies every day. Thankfully I am better at this then another daily endeavor- exercising.
I live in mid Missouri with my amazing husband Mark, you will see him around here occasionally, and the three cutest kids to ever walk this earth.
To me creating is breathing, and in this busy stage of life with three young kids, my chosen creative outlet is cooking, and blogging about my allergen friendly creations.
Let’s see, what else would you like to know?
- I am very good at messing up a kitchen.
- If I see a clean kitchen, I know it is time to cook.
- I love reading and playing with my kids.
- I sneeze very loudly.
I think that covers the basics. I’m glad you are here!
